So what brands do we recommend?
We chose the LIFEPAK, Heartsine and iPAD AEDs
Witnessing a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is hard enough to deal with. It's very stressful and emotional, and without experience most people panic. It's hard to stay calm in that situation, so whatever AEDs we chose to get behind, they had to be dependable and simple to use by any bystander, even those who have had no contact with an AED before.
After those driving factors, the AED had to be recognisable, very low maintenance with consumables readily available and it had to be robust in construction.

LIFEPAK by Physio Control - the brand that our Emergency Medical Service providers (St John and Wellington Free Ambulance) have on board their ambulances.
The Lifepak CR2 is known to be the easiest to use AED on the market. It delivers a lifesaving dosage of 360 joules when needed (in accordance with NZ Guidelines). Not only that, but being 100% compatible with the LIFEPAK defibrillators and monitors that front-line Ambulance crews have on board (those pads just plug straight in), when EMS arrive and time is critical they can simply attach their machine to the pads already in place.
The CR2 has a few added features that make it ideal for more experienced responders who understand the importance of continuous CPR :
The CR2 has a few added features that make it ideal for more experienced responders who understand the importance of continuous CPR :
- the CR2 has cprINSIGHT - normally you have to pause CPR for an AED to analyse the hearts rhythm. Not any more. The CR2 lets you continue CPR while it gathers information on the condition of the heart and will tell you when/if a shock is required. Continuous CPR get a big "thumbs up".
- Switchable between adult and child mode
- the CR2 has Wi-Fi or 3g connectivity (depending on model chosen) - the LIFELINKcentral AED Program Manager monitors each connected LIFEPAK CR2 defibrillator and alerts you or your maintenance provider of anything that may affect its readiness - battery status, location, maintenance dates.
- It captures even more complex data and makes it available to responding Advanced Life Support crews.
iPAD SP1 by CU Medical Systems - the brand that the British Heart Foundation selected to be used for their Government Funded Scheme to put AEDs in public places.
The iPAD SP1 was chosen because of it's trusted technology and simplicity. Has some very useful features that others don't have, making it a great choice for schools, healthcare centres and childcare centres.
